(L-R: Former Cllr Ian Bates and Chairman Cllr Peter Bucknell)

At an informal meeting before full council meeting on 29 March, Huntingdonshire district councillors awarded the position of Alderman to former councillor Mr Ian Bates, who was unable to attend a special council meeting in December.

The award was made in recognition of his distinguished public service to the district and people of Huntingdonshire and to The Hemingfords ward. Mr Bates served 20 consecutive years in office and undertook a number of roles for the council, including deputy leader from 2001 to 2004 and leader of the council and chairman of the cabinet for six years from 2005 to 2011.

The council resolved to introduce the titles of Honorary Alderman and Honorary Alderwoman for current and future members of the council who cumulatively have served 12 years as an elected councillor on the district council.
