Nearly two months after Huntingdonshire District Council sent out electoral registration forms to over 77,000 households in the district, reminder letters have been sent to 27,000 homes to ensure that residents don’t lose out on their opportunity to vote in future elections.

By now every household in the district should have received their form which they can respond to by telephone, online, text or by post. Anyone living at an address who is eligible, but not already registered, is being encouraged to sign up.

Jo Lancaster, Electoral Registration Officer for Huntingdonshire District Council, said: “It is important that you respond to your electoral registration form. Please remember that if anyone is not registered at your household they will need to register individually. All of this information is available on the form and our reminder letter, so simply follow the steps to make sure you secure your vote.”

If you don’t register to vote:

  • you may not be able to vote at forthcoming elections
  • you may get a fine
  • it may harm your credit score or
  • it could mean you won’t be able to get a mortgage, loan, mobile phone contract or other credit.

Lisa Jablonska, Elections and Democratic Services Manager, said: “Over 66% of households have responded so far, but we are still waiting for 27,000 to respond. Anyone who hasn’t replied will have received a reminder letter, and at the end October and into November our canvassers will visit the remaining properties who have not responded to check their details.”

Whilst the council can save money if people reply to their forms promptly, failure to respond could also have financial consequences for residents’ own finances. Even if your details haven’t changed, you still need to respond by returning the form using the telephone, going online or by text to let the council know and ensure you can vote in future elections.
