A new Junior Boxing Club opened in Yaxley on 16 October following a successful funding bid through the Living Sport Satellite Club funding program. The club has taken a year to set up, involving a number of partners. Huntingdonshire District Council’s Active Lifestyles team has led on the development of the programme, with support from the Community Development team.

The Active Lifestyles team set up the club with Peterborough Police Amateur Boxing Club (CAMPOL) and Yaxley Parish Council, who have kindly allowed free use of the Owen Pooley Hall.

The club is a satellite club of CAMPOL, and means that locals in Yaxley will have access to high quality boxing coaching in a supervised and safe environment. Boys and girls from 12-18 years of age will have the chance to participate in boxing training with the knowledge and expertise of a boxing club that boasts over 30 years of experience.

There will be no sparring or fighting at the club and those interested in taking their boxing to this level can move on into the experienced CAMPOL club. The club is running to all national governing body standards, and will be a safe opportunity for young people to try out boxing training in their own community.

Chris Baker, who is head coach at CAMPOL, said: “We are so pleased to have been able to work with HDC and the Parish Council to make this club happen. The club will be a great new addition to the local community, and will give young people an opportunity to learn a new sport and develop friendships and confidence along the way.”

Cllr John Palmer, whose executive responsibilities include One Leisure Active Lifestyles, said: “We are delighted to be involved in such a fantastic new club. This is a community sports club in every sense of the word. The local Parish Council, a well-established local sports club, and Active Lifestyles have come together to make this new club possible. It will offer young people a new and exciting opportunity right in the heart of their own community. The club has everything in place to become a real asset to the local sporting landscape.”

When the club opened it was an instant hit, with 18 young boys turning up to participate. The club has a capacity of 20 so places are already in demand, with a waiting list being planned should demand overtake available spaces.

The club is open to girls and boys aged 12-18 and takes place at Owen Pooley Hall in Yaxley, every Tuesday from 5:30-6:30pm. There will be an open afternoon on Friday 26 October from 12:30pm to 2pm at the hall where Pete Thorpe, Sports Development Officer for Active Lifestyles, will be on hand to show people the club and answer any questions.
