Huntingdonshire District Council has launched replacement uniforms for refuse crew staff as a preventative measure to avoid accidents out on their rounds.

The personal protective equipment (PPE) features a logo to show residents that live CCTV is in operation on the refuse lorries to watch over the crew and make sure that they are safe.

After a few recent incidents that have endangered staff on shift, the new PPE logos will deter residents from driving carelessly around refuse crews.

Marge Beuttell, Executive Councillor for Operations and Regulation, said: "Our refuse operatives do a fantastic job in our communities and new PPE with CCTV logos will help our crews stay safe and continue to deliver a first class service to residents. The nature of the job puts the loaders at risk on the road, however with the introduction of new uniform, highlighting that live filming is taking place, we hope minimise this risk."

The updated PPE was first used on Thursday 1 August 2019, and since then the Waste Management Team has not seen any serious incidents occur. Installing cameras on waste collection vehicles is not uncommon - it’s becoming industry best practice by authorities across the country.
