Huntingdonshire District Council’s Active Lifestyles team have just completed a busy summer delivering activities across the district, including another successful year for their Parish Sports Programme.

Working in partnership with 6 of Huntingdonshire’s parish councils, the team have been delivering multi-sport sessions to children of primary school age throughout the summer. The activities included a range of traditional sports such as football, hockey, cricket and tri-golf as well as ‘new age’ sports such as dodgeball, rabble and boccia.

Each parish council commissions our Active Lifestyles team to deliver the sessions, which are offered to the children within the parish for free and throughout the summer has seen a total of 195 children attend at least one of the 29 sessions delivered. This translated into over 400 attendances across the 6 parishes.

Executive Councillor for Community Resilience and Wellbeing, Cllr Simon Bywater, said: "The District Council has a key role to play in our communities to facilitate wellbeing support and our Active Lifestyles team has been a great example of that this summer. The programme of sports and activities has provided a wonderful opportunity for local kids to get active and social and is an exciting part of our wider goal to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle among residents in the district."

Following on from the pandemic, these sessions have been a fantastic opportunity to not only help develop key physical skills and introduce the children to new sports, but also to provide a friendly and welcoming space to allow those attending to be social and make new friends in their parish. The Active Lifestyles team received positive feedback from the sessions, covering the enthusiastic leaders and the wide array of sports that were involved and available.

The Active Lifestyles Team are looking to expand the Parish Sports Programme, therefore if you are a member of your parish council and would like to discuss how to can bring these sessions to your parish, please contact Tom Leonard, Sports Development Officer, on email via thomas.leonard@huntingdonshire.gov.uk.
