Huntingdonshire District Council (HDC) is passionate about providing high-quality services to our communities, residents and businesses. This means we must employ and retain the most talented and dedicated people.

Situated within the heart of the Cambridge-Peterborough Growth Area, Huntingdonshire is a beautiful district that boasts thriving market towns and many attractive villages, each with its own identity. We are an innovative and forward-thinking local authority whose residents are at the heart of our decision-making.

At HDC we want to employ staff who embody our icare values (Inspiring, Collaborative, Accountable, Respectful, Enterprising), all of which support our ultimate purpose of putting our customers first.

Job details

Bring your payroll expertise to a role where your accuracy, technical skill and problem‑solving mindset keep our organisation running smoothly and make a real, measurable impact every single month.

About the role

As our new Payroll and Systems Advisor, you’ll play a key part in delivering an accurate, timely and customer‑focused payroll service for the council. You’ll take ownership of end‑to‑end payroll processing across our diverse workforce, ensuring compliance with local policies, HMRC requirements and LGPS regulations.

You’ll be hands‑on with our HR and Payroll system every day, providing technical support, maintaining organisational structures, managing upgrades, troubleshooting issues and making sure our data is always robust and reliable.

This is a role with real breadth: you’ll support colleagues and managers with expert advice, liaise with external partners, help drive process improvements and deputise for the Payroll and Systems Manager when needed. It’s a great opportunity to work at the heart of our HR and Payroll operations and make a meaningful difference to the employee experience.

About you

You’ll bring strong technical payroll experience and a confident understanding of legislation, pensions and end‑to‑end payroll processes. You’ll be someone who thrives on detail, works methodically and takes real pride in getting things right the first time.

Your ability to analyse data, spot anomalies and solve problems calmly under pressure will help you succeed, as will your clear, friendly communication style, whether you’re supporting colleagues, responding to queries or guiding system users through changes.

You’ll be comfortable working independently, highly organised, and able to balance a busy workload without compromising on accuracy. Experience with integrated HR/Payroll systems is essential, and if you’ve used iTrent or worked in a local government environment, that’s even better.

An offer of employment is conditional upon having the right to work in the UK. HDC does not hold a Sponsorship Licence and is unable to provide a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) or take over sponsorship for any role.
