What attracted you to HDC?

Firstly, after spending almost 10 years travelling up the A14 every day to Cambridge every day, I wanted to work more locally.

I’ve lived in Huntingdonshire since I was 12 years old and have worked in the Community space for over 15 years, and I wanted to help local people more.

I felt I knew the area well and thought I could make a difference, so I was delighted when the job I was appointed to was advertised – working locally, within the community where I could use the skills I had gathered over the years. I knew there would be opportunities to move around and up, and I relished the chance to develop further.

What do you value most about working here?

Supporting people to make lasting positive change is such a good feeling. HDC really allows us to tailor the care we give to what people need, which is why we can make the difference that we do. I value the trust that is placed in us to deliver results in the best possible way, which shows how HDC respects its employees and our ideas. I also think that things like flexible working are of huge value.

What keeps you here?

There is a real culture of teamwork and trust. I have been here for four and a half years and was recently to be promoted to another role within the Communities team – something my manager really supported me into doing. I have always felt that mentorship and a desire to support her team from her, and I have appreciated that I can develop my career here. I love that no two days are ever the same, and I get a good mix of working internally, with residents and also with outside organisations. There is always a new challenge or crisis to deal with, and I thrive from solving problems which my job allows me to do daily.

What advice would you give others who are considering a career at HDC?

Do it! There is a really good balance of hard work, drive, fun, collaboration, challenge, flexibility, and much more. There is also a job for everyone – the range of different careers paths is vast withing the whole organisation and you are treated as a person not just a number.
