There are over 10 million disabled people in the UK. According to the latest Sport England Active Lives Adult Study, disabled people say they are nearly twice as likely to be physically inactive (43%), compared with non-disabled people (21%).
Sport and physical activity have massive benefits to health and wellbeing. As well as improving life chances and expectancy, sport has been proven to boost confidence and social interaction.
Disability Sport in Huntingdonshire
Our One Leisure Active Lifestyles team works with communities across the district to improve the health and well-being of all residents. We strive to provide disabled people with the same opportunities and choices as non-disabled people to participate, and stay, in sport.
We aim to do this in five ways:
community development - creating additional opportunities for participation in sport and recreation
coach education - improving coaching opportunities and awareness
health - promoting the use of sport and recreation to improve health
club development - working with existing clubs to provide opportunities for target groups
information - promoting and improving awareness of sporting opportunities for target groups.

Fit for Life and Sport
An educational toolkit has been developed by the Peter Harrison Centre and the British Paralympic Association as part of the Fit and Healthy project.
There are five guides which contain disability-specific information on physical activity and exercise, nutrition and psychology. You can find out how to improve your health and fitness and progress towards your own personal performance goals.
