What is ESCAPE Pain?

ESCAPE Pain stands for Enabling Self-management and Coping with Arthritic Pain through Exercise. ESCAPE Pain is a rehabilitation programme that helps people with osteoarthritis (OA) and/or chronic joint pain self-manage their condition.

The programme aims to increase physical function and improve quality of life. It is targeted at those suffering from knee or hip osteoarthritis.

The programme runs over six weeks, with participants attending for one hour, twice a week. Each session contains around a 20 minute discussion focused on helping to support self-management followed by around 45 minutes of exercise.

Who is it for?

These ESCAPE Pain courses are open to patients who have received a text message or notification inviting them to the course.

Patients must:

  • be over 45 years of age

  • have knee and/or hip OA or

  • chronic knee and/or hip pain for 3 months or more

  • need a supervised exercise programme in order to:

    • gain confidence and motivate themselves or

    • get them started on a self-management programme

  • be independently mobile

  • be able to communicate well enough in a group setting

  • have no contraindications to regular exercise.

Where and when

Hartford Village Hall, 16 Main Street, Huntingdon, PE29 1YS.

Starting from 26 January until 4 March 2026 at 1.30pm - 2.30pm.

(Mondays and Wednesdays for 6 weeks - 12 sessions in total).

How much does it cost?

This ESCAPE Pain course is free of charge, in partnership with your Primary Care Network.

Following the end of the programme participants will be given the opportunity to continue exercising using the One Leisure centres, or recommended other activities to continue their progress.
