What is a Notification of Interest?

Under Section 178 of the Licensing Act 2003, anyone with a qualifying legal interest in a licensed premises may formally notify the licensing authority that they wish to be informed of any changes or applications relating to that premises. 

Once registered, the authority will:

  • record the interest

  • send confirmation, and

  • notify you of any future applications or changes affecting that premises.

Who can register an interest?

You may apply if you have any of the following legal interests:

  • freeholder or leaseholder of the premises

  • mortgagee (legal mortgage holder)

  • legal right to occupy the premises

  • any other prescribed legal interest.

What you will be notified about

Once your interest is logged, you will receive notifications relating to:

  • new premises licence applications

  • variations to existing licences

  • transfers of licences

  • reviews

  • notification if a licence lapses or is surrendered.

How to apply

You must apply using our online portal. You first need to register to obtain an account.

During the application process, you need to provide:

  • proof of your qualifying interest

  • pay the required fee of £23.

Validity and renewal

A Notification of Interest is valid for 12 months from the date of receipt.

After this period, you may submit a new notification if you wish to continue receiving updates.
