Huntingdonshire District Council has responded to the Government’s latest update on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR), which confirms that no decision has yet been made on the future structure of local government in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
While the Government has provided further information on the national programme and confirmed that all proposals for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough remain under consideration, the announcement means continued uncertainty for residents, businesses and councils across the area.
Sarah Conboy, Executive leader of Huntingdonshire District Council, said:
"Today's announcement is deeply disappointing for Huntingdonshire and the wider Cambridgeshire and Peterborough area. After months of work developing and assessing proposals, we had hoped the Government would provide certainty about the future of local government in our area.
"Instead, residents, businesses and councils are being asked to wait longer for a decision. We will continue to work constructively with our partners while seeking greater clarity from Government on the next steps and timescales."
The Government has indicated that a final decision on the future structure of local government in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough is expected by early next year. In the meantime, Huntingdonshire District Council will continue to work closely with partners across the region to understand the implications of the announcement and prepare for the next phase of the programme.
There are no immediate changes to council services, which will continue to be delivered as normal while councils await further details from Government.
