What is a BioBlitz?

A BioBlitz is an exciting event that brings together local community members, volunteer scientists, families, students and teachers to explore and document biodiversity in a specific area.

Participants work together to find and identify as many species of plants, animals, fungi and other organisms as possible within a set time period. These discoveries are recorded and contribute to local and national wildlife databases.

Why participate in a BioBlitz?

  • Educational experience: A BioBlitz offers hands-on learning, enhancing knowledge about local ecosystems and the importance of biodiversity.

  • Community engagement: It fosters community spirit as people of all ages and backgrounds come together to explore nature.

  • Scientific contribution: Data collected during a BioBlitz helps scientists monitor species and track environmental changes.

  • Fun and adventure: With interactive activities for both children and adults, it’s an exciting way to spend time outdoors and discover the natural world.

Benefits of a BioBlitz

  1. Connect with nature: Discover the wildlife living right on your doorstep.

  2. Learn from experts: Gain insights from experienced naturalists and wildlife watchers.

  3. Contribute to science: Your findings help monitor local biodiversity and contribute to national databases.

  4. Engage the community: Bring together friends, family, and neighbours for a day of exploration and learning.

  5. Enhance awareness: Promote understanding and appreciation of local natural habitats.

How to get involved

Joining a BioBlitz is easy and fun! Here are some ways you can participate:

  • Join an existing Event: Look for local BioBlitz events in your area and sign up to participate.

  • Organise your own BioBlitz: If you're interested in hosting a BioBlitz, our detailed BioBlitz Guide [PDF, 2MB] [PDF, 2MB] provides all the information you need to get started.

  • Use the iNaturalist app: Download the iNaturalist app to help identify and record your discoveries. This tool is essential for documenting species and sharing your findings with the broader community.
